Abstract.
In this paper the effect of different pretreatments on
biodegradation of sludge
solids soluble were evaluated. The waste activated sludge
was obtained from a municipal
waste water treatment plant and consolidated to 3 % solids.
Waste activated sludge
pretreatments were done: alkaline, ultrasound, thermal,
alkaline-thermal, alkalineultrasound
and ultrasound–alkaline. Pretreatments resulted in waste
activated sludge
solubilization as was demonstrated by an increase of soluble
chemical oxygen demand and
reduction of sludge solids. The biodegradability was tested
using anaerobic sludge as
inoculum with methanogenic activity of 0.44 g CODCH4·g
VSS-1·d-1, the concentration of
volatiles solids in the reactor was 1.5 g VSS·L-1 and the
supernatant of sludge pretreatment
was used as substrate, at mean concentration of 3 g COD·L-1.
The anaerobic digestion was
performed for six days. For waste activated sludge samples
with the above named
pretreatment, the major release soluble VSS was 90 % for
alkaline-ultrasound and 89 % for
ultrasound-alkaline. Further, waste activated sludge samples
with alkaline-ultrasound
pretreatment presented the major biodegradability (65 %).
